Heart Healthy Holiday Tips: Taking Care of Your Heart, Mind, and Body This Season

As if the holiday season couldn't get even more stressful, a 2023 press release from the American Heart Association shows this time of year brings weight gain, added anxiety, and even a spike in serious cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes. Grim news, we know, but you don't have to let the holiday hustle wreak havoc on your health. According to the American Heart Association, here are some ways to keep yourself feeling your best this season.

Step one: Know the symptoms and take action.

Heart attack signs can differ between men and women, and catching these symptoms early is crucial. If you or a loved one experience chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or other unusual symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately. Quick action can make all the difference in preventing serious heart damage and improving the chances of survival.

Step two: Celebrate and be merry — but in moderation.

The holidays often mean rich food and a bit more alcohol than usual. But eating mindfully doesn't mean depriving yourself. Small changes like swapping out high-sodium dishes or cutting back on sugary desserts can help you feel your best without missing out on the festivities. Moderation is key, so enjoy yourself without going overboard.

Step three: Plan ahead for self-care.

Holiday stress is real. Between family gatherings, budget constraints, and packed schedules, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Take time for yourself — whether that means stepping outside for fresh air, setting boundaries with family, or scheduling in quiet moments. Reducing stress is just as important for your heart as eating right or staying active.

Step four: Don't stop moving.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week, but let's be honest, that number tends to drop during the holiday craze. Get creative with ways to stay active. Try a family walk after dinner, or squeeze in quick workouts whenever you can.

Step five: Stick to your medications.

With all the hustle and bustle, it's easy to skip or forget medications. Set reminders, use a medication chart, and make sure to refill prescriptions on time. Staying on top of your meds and monitoring blood pressure will keep your health steady through the season.
